The biggest danger to our pond are toxic algae blooms. The best way to deal with it is to prevent our backyard pond from algae growing.
⠀
WHAT CAUSES ALGAE IN PONDS?
First of all, the water in the backyard pond should not contain excess fertilizer substances – products of transformation of organic substances in the spring. In order to avoid it in time, you should clean the pond in the fall of any remaining and rotting leaves and other shoots of plants, silt, and replace some water with fresh tap water.
The pond should be stocked with plants that develop at low temperatures, which in early spring (and generally in colder periods) will create an effective competition for algae.
⠀
FEEDING THE ANIMALS IN THE POND
Fish food should be served in small portions, consumed by our pupils in a short time.
You should control the ratio of animals to plants, do not overburden the pond with animals, i.e. colloquially speaking – you must not put too many fish in the pond in relation to the plants.
Let us remind you that food debris and metabolic products decompose, becoming a nutrient for algae. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically control the concentration of nitrates in the pond and partial water change in the event of exceeding the permissible level. Providing a good pond water quality is a first step to low-maintenance pond.
