3 BASIC RULES TO KEEP KOI AND OTHER FISH
What to consider when you decide to add fish into you pond? You will find simple 3-step guide below. It will help you start breeding Koi fish ant others from the basic.
⠀
Fish need clean water
Your fish need some basic conditions to live a long and healthy life. One of them is keeping the water clean. The pond water quality significantly influences its pH, which is the median for the quality of your fish’s daily life. The proper filtration provides clear and clean water, but how to achieve that?
⠀
When we talk about quality of pond water, another very important thing is toxic algae blooms. You can prevent this from happening by introducing aquatic plants into your pond that will take up nutrients. Were it not for them, otherwise they would become food for algae. The role of aquatic plants is significant when it comes to creation low-maintenanced pond with balanced ecosystem.
⠀
Keep healthy population
How to recognize a well-kept pond with a balanced ecosystem and good water quality? By conscious control of the fish population in the backyard pond of course. Although it may seem tempting to introduce more colored fish, we need to keep it balanced. The rule is simple. It tells about the proportion of 10 inch fish to 100 gallons of water. In this case, for 5 such fish, our pond should be 500 gallons of water.
⠀
Well feed your fish
We feed the fish once a day in spring and autumn, in summer – twice. All because of increased activity and thus faster energy burning. We do not feed the fish when the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Feeding fish, we follow the few-minute rule. We give them as much food as they can eat within 3 to 5 minutes. Fish also find and eat food from natural sources, such as algae or insects.
