BASIC POND MAINTENANCE MISTAKES
What you should remember when setting up a pond in the garden? We present basic pond maintenance mistakes.
Instead of clean water in the pond and a pleasant microclimate, we have an overgrowing puddle which brings more trouble than joy? We advise you on how to avoid mistakes by setting up a pond in the garden.

BASIC POND MAINTENANCE MISTAKES
The water in which the toxic algae blooms turns brown green, the algae settle to the bottom, sometimes forming a thick film. Algae appear shortly after an establishment, but after some time they disappear in large, planted ponds. This is because a biological balance is established there – just like in natural ponds.
⠀
Commonly made basic pond maintenance mistakes:
- Building small sized pond – If possible, it is best to have an area of at least 10 m2, because then it is easier to maintain biological balance. It is also important that the pond is about 2-3 feet deep.
- Lack of shade – Algae grows fastest in well-lit places. That is why it is worth planting shrubs and tall perennials around the pond to shade it, or build a pond in such a place that the sun reaches there no longer than 5-6 hours a day.
- Too intensive fertilization – algae often appear in water which is rich in nutrients. If fertilizers get inside the pond (for example, rinsed with rain) – they will be used by the algae.
- Overfeeding the fish – uneaten food will sink to the bottom and become a breeding ground for algae. It is best to feed the fish with enough food that they will eat it within 5-10 minutes once a day.
- Keeping too much fish in the pond – decaying fish droppings feed the algae. If there are too much of them, it can even poison the water in the pond. This is because during the decomposition of organic residues, oxygen is taken up – when there is lack of it, rotting processes take place in the water, during which toxic compounds are formed.
