How to add fish to your backyard pond?
The last stage of work on setting up a pond is also the most pleasant one – of course, it is about adding fish into your backyard pond. You will find a few useful tips which will help you with it down below.
⠀
FINDING THE BIOLOGICAL BALANCE
Before we go to the store or the breeder for fish, let’s make sure that our pond is mature. It is a mistake to introduce any lives to the tank where the water has not stood out for at least 3 weeks, because the biological balance has not been established yet. The first sign of it is the appearance of algae – a pond without them is not functioning properly yet.
⠀
FISH SIZE
Too much fish in one pond won’t support establishing biological balance. Usually it is assumed that there should be at least 3 cm2 of water for a fish length of 2.5 cm. The number of fish we can introduce therefore depends on the size of the tank and the target size of the species we want to breed. Remember – the more space we provide for the animals, the better.
⠀
PURCHASE OF FISH
Buying fish from a breeder who is an expert on a given species is a good choice. He will be able to explain its requirements. Remember to carefully examine all the specimens before purchasing. They should have clean skin without wounds, cavities and discoloration, and shiny eyes. It is not worth buying fish that are sluggish and stand in one corner of the tank. If at least one fish in the stock shows disturbing symptoms, it is better to seek for another breeder.

ADDING FISH INTO THE POND
The fish should be transported in plastic bags filled with water and air. Before we let them into the pond, the bag should be placed on the surface of the water, for there to equalize temperatures. Fish can not be left in direct sunlight. After a dozen or so minutes, you can gently open the bag and the fish will flow out by themselves. Most likely, they will initially hide in a dark and quiet place and will not be interested in food – you need to give them a time to acclimatize.
