WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE GETTING A TURTLE IN THE POND?
Watching turtles sunbathing with stretched legs in your beautifully planted backyard pond can bring a lot of joy. But do you know what to look for when planning a pond for your new family member?
⠀
How much big should be your pool so the turtle could grow to adult size? The backyard pond should consist about 50 gallons to allow to grow your turtle to adult size. You need to monitor also pond water quality. Proper depth in your pond is when there will still be a foot of unfrozen water under the ice. If you want to winterize turtles in the pond, you need to dig a several foot depth of your pond, depending on frost zone of your region. Remember that under the frost line your turtle need 18 inches layer of material such as leaves and mud. This will let your turtle dig into it and winterize.
⠀
After putting the liner, put the sand of the bottom of your pond. It will let the turtles dig in or stay on it. Make a fence with 18 inches rocks. That is how you will secure the pond. Remember also to place healthy plants, stones and logs inside it. The plants will give the shade for the turtles in sunny day, rocks and logs provide basking space for them.
⠀
FILTRATION IN YOUR POND
Do you wonder how to keep your water clean? Filtration is one of the most important things you need to consider before planning a turtle pond.
