Find out what promotes the growth of algae in your garden pond and learn about effective ways to get rid of them!
Massive growth of algae – supported by the high content of nitrates and phosphates in the water – may become a risk not only to the beautiful appearance of a home pond, but also to the health of the fish and plants living in it.
⠀
WHAT ARE ALGAE?
Algae are a group of organisms that, like vascular plants, are able to photosynthesize and develop successfully even at temperatures lower than 5 degrees Celsius, so in early spring. For their growth, there is enough nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer substances and good exposure to light. With such low requirements, they successfully compete with ornamental plants grown in the pond.
⠀
EXCESSIVE GROWTH OF ALGAE AND RISKS
Algae assimilate carbon dioxide during the day and emit oxygen, and during the night they take up and consume oxygen, and emit carbon dioxide. For this reason, with their massive development, the pH of the water may fluctuate significantly in the daily cycle – in the morning it may drop below 6.5, and during the day it may even rise to over 9.0. Such significant pH differences occurring over a relatively short period of time are very detrimental to the health of the fish.
⠀
Algae, covering the water surface in a garden pond, make it difficult for light to reach vascular plants. Thus, they disrupt the process of assimilation and inhibit proper development. Moreover, they hinder the gas exchange between the two environments – water and air. The remains of dead algae become the cause of water contamination with decomposition products.
⠀
Algae not only damage the pond ecosystem, but can produce toxins that penetrate the gills and digestive tract of the fish.
